What happened

Read it like a field journal. Each chapter logs evidence onto the board, and the plot twists stay redacted until you declassify them.

Chapter 01 / 04Mary Celeste

Bound for Genoa

The Mary Celeste left New York in November 1872 carrying barrels of alcohol for Genoa. Captain Briggs had brought his wife and young daughter with him, along with a crew of seven.

Chapter 02 / 04Mary Celeste

Found under sail

In early December the Dei Gratia found her drifting. Sources disagree on whether it was 4 or 5 December. The boarding party found the ship seaworthy but disturbed: there was water in the hold, some sails were set and others damaged, and the cargo was still aboard.

The ship's lifeboat was missing. Whoever had been aboard appeared to have left in it.

Plot twist 01

The untouched breakfast never existed

Later stories describe warm meals on the table and a ship in perfect order. The boarding crew found water in the hold and a disturbed ship. The famous scene came from fiction, including an 1884 story by a young Arthur Conan Doyle.

Chapter 03 / 04Mary Celeste

The last entry

The ship's records gave a last position on 25 November, near Santa Maria in the Azores. After that there was nothing. Later weather reconstructions use those records, but they are modern analysis, not testimony.

Plot twist 02

A pump had been taken apart

One of the ship's pumps was found disassembled. If the crew believed she was taking on water faster than she was, they may have left a sound ship for an open boat.

Chapter 04 / 04Mary Celeste

The Gibraltar inquiry

The Dei Gratia's crew sailed the Mary Celeste to Gibraltar and claimed salvage. The hearing examined the ship closely and considered whether there had been foul play. It found no proof.

Testimony from a diver and a surveyor survives in a letter dated 11 March 1873, held by the Phillips Library. The inquiry was about salvage, not a criminal trial, and it did not establish what became of the ten people.
